POSITION SUMMARY:
The Network Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining an organization's network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, VPN, and wireless networks. They work collaboratively with other Business Technology professionals to ensure that the network is secure, reliable, and efficient, and they proactively identify and resolve network issues. The Network Engineer also manages and maintains network security, including firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, and other security technologies.
In addition to their technical responsibilities, the Network Engineer provides guidance and mentorship to junior network engineers and other IT staff, and they stay current with emerging network technologies and trends to recommend changes to improve network performance, security, and reliability. They also work closely with other Business Technology professionals, including other SREs, Developers, Tech Support Samurai, Application Support Ninjas, and security specialists, to ensure that the network infrastructure is integrated with other Business Technology systems and services.
Overall, the Network Engineer is a highly skilled and experienced professional who plays a critical role in ensuring that an organization's network infrastructure is optimized to meet business needs and is prepared for future growth and changes in technology.
EXPERIENCE:
- 6+ years working with network protocols, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, SMTP, SNMP, and VPN. They should also have strong experience with network hardware, including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and wireless access points.
- 2+ years working with network automation and orchestration tools such as Ansible, Python, and PowerShell, experience with scripting and programming languages such as Bash, Perl, and Ruby, and a proven track record of successful network planning, design, implementation, and troubleshooting.
- Relevant industry certifications, such as CCNP or CCIE, are highly desirable.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, configure, implement, and maintain network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, VPN, and wireless networks, and maintain appropriate network monitoring tools
- Develop and maintain network documentation, including network diagrams, inventory, and change management procedures
- Monitor network performance, identify and resolve network issues, and proactively address potential problems
- Plan and execute network upgrades and enhancements, including hardware and software upgrades and network capacity planning
- Manage and maintain network security, including firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, and other security technologies
- Work collaboratively with other BT professionals, including site reliability engineers, software developers, and security specialists, to ensure that network infrastructure is integrated with other BT systems and services
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior network engineers and other BT staff
- Stay current with emerging network technologies and trends and recommend changes to improve network performance, security, and reliability
- Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of each data center’s architecture, and supporting infrastructure elements & vendors within Power.
- Applies knowledge each of infrastructure ecosystem within all of Power’s data centers respectfully, providing thoughtful input on design and improvement in regard to survivability and scalability.
- Has in-depth understanding and knowledge of Power’s data center infrastructure & network standards and coding practices, and helps shape SRE standards & operating procedures, and coding practices.
- Provides technical leadership to assigned primary SRE team, as well as other teams across the BT Services Unit.
- Participates and supports initiatives outside of main area of responsibility.
- Helps keep team morale high by being a role model, escalating when additional support is required.
- Participates regularly and provides product team code reviews and cross team code reviews as well as provides written feedback for performance reviews that is insightful, specific and actionable.
- Demonstrates great initiative in providing guidance and mentorship across the BT organization, sharing knowledge and offering assistance without being asked.
- Takes responsibility to test work prior to implementation and actively reviews other’s work.
- Understands and promotes SRE principles contained within the Google SRE book.
- Participates in Kanban/Scrum ceremonies scheduled by the team.
- Clearly communicates schedule and planned vacations to the SRE team and BT Leadership in advance.
- Performs other tasks, as assigned by BT Leadership.
- Must be able to sit at a desk and type for 8 hours a day.
